How Your Period Will Save The World

How Your Period Will Save The World

It’s a universal truth that plastic is not good for the environment. If you haven’t seen images of deceased whales washing to shore full of plastic and sea creatures caught in plastic products, microbeads in the bellies of fish and straws stuck in the nostrils of sea turtles…you are hiding under a wifi-less rock.

The truth is that menstruators will on average use over 9.1k tampons in their lifetime (1), and up to 15,000 plastic pads and/or tampons (2). This plastic will take generations to decompose and are already polluting our oceans and beaches at a devastating and growing rate. (3)

I have good news! Your Period Will Save The World! Here’s how:

As a young woman, disposable pads and tampons were all I knew. When I first got my period at age 11, my Mom handed me plastic pads. A few years later, the first tampon I tried had a plastic applicator because that’s what was available at the store. I was mortified at the checkout.

These pads and tampons often cross my mind. While I started menstruating over 25 years ago, the tampons I used as a pre-teen will be around for generations to come. Plastic pads are thought to take 250 – 500 years to decompose (4) and those hard plastic tampon applicators can take even longer.

My children’s, children’s, children’s, children’s, children’s kids + will still be dealing with MY tampon applicators and possibly even my used disposable pads.

And, I’m just one person. This waste is piling up from menstruators all over the world!

That’s just not acceptable. When we throw something away, there is no “away,” it only changes location.

Periods Will Save The World

It doesn’t have to be this way. Every month I have my period and I reach for one of my favorite reusable menstrual cups and reusable menstrual pads.

As I change my reusable menstrual product I think, that’s one pad or tampon I saved from the landfill and it won’t be something my great, great, great, great, great+ grandkids find at the beach.

I feel relieved knowing that my tampon applicator is not swimming in the belly of a whale, washing up on shore or breaking up into pieces of plastic that fish mistake for food.

This is how periods will save the world. Each menstruator that makes the switch is benefiting the planet and future generations to come!

Plus, starting to use reusable menstrual products leads to other reusable products. Soon, if you haven’t already, you find reusable shopping bags, reusable produce bags, a great stainless steel water bottle and coffee mug, stainless steel straws and before you know it you’re canning your own spaghetti sauce in reusable jars marveling in the amazing taste thinking…who even sold me “disposable” products in the first place?

Plastic is not good for anyone, any creature and certainly not the planet we need to support life.

You and your period can save the planet. You just need to get started!
