One of the most common questions I get is “What are yoni eggs and how do they work?” Yoni eggs are one of many ways to strengthen the vagina and pelvic floor. In addition, Yoni eggs have been used for centuries. It’s estimated that they have been used for over 5,000 years! (1)
Yoni eggs are worn inside the vagina for exercise and come in various sizes and materials. In addition to strengthing the vagina and pelvic floor muscles, many believe that the different stones have unique benefits and are even used for vaginal weightlifting.

What’s a yoni?
If you’re reading the name “yoni egg” then you are probably getting the egg part based on the shape of the stone below, but what about the yoni?
Yoni, is a stylised representation of female genitalia. It represents the goddess Shakti, “…the concept or personification of divine feminine creative power, sometimes referred to as “The Great Divine Mother” in Hinduism.” It can also commonly refer to anatomy or terms including womb, uterus, vagina, vulva, abode, or source. What are yoni eggs for?
Yoni eggs are used for many reasons. Yoni egg shops claim that the eggs can do everything from increasing your sex drive to overcoming issues with infertility. However, more commonly, yoni eggs are understood to increase strength in your vaginal wall and pelvic floor. This strength helps to reduce incontinence, can increase sexual pleasure, and help to prepare and recover from childbirth. (1)
After spending hours researching yoni eggs, I noticed that they seem to be closely associated with yoga and meditation practices. While I can’t locate anything specificially connecting these practices, it’s difficult to search for yoni eggs without stumbling upon photos of yoga practitioners.
What size yoni egg do I need?
Yoni eggs typically come in sets of 3. The eggs shown below are rose quartz and have a large, medium and small. The large egg is the easiest and is often recommended for beginners, the smallest egg is the hardest. The theory is that as your vaginal walls strengthen and increase tone, they will be able to hold smaller yoni eggs.
One important thing you need to know
The company I purchased the eggs from said that unwaxed floss must be used like a tampon string. The string is there to avoid having the egg become difficult to remove. However, they did not provide the floss! I looked online without luck and determined I needed to shop locally! Five stores later, including Target and Walmart, I finally found it at our local CVS.
How do I use yoni eggs?
Yoni eggs are a tool to help with kegel exercises. You use your yoni egg while doing these vagina crunches by pulling your vagina and pelvic floor muscles up and in. Someone just starting may do 3 sets of 10 fast squeezes with the large egg and someone more advanced may be able to do 100 squeezes for 20 seconds each with the small egg.
To accomplish this, you insert the yoni egg into your vagina and do the exercises. When you’re done, you remove the yoni egg, wash and store.
Yoni eggs are often used as a tool for vaginal weightlifting! Because they are typically pre-drilled with a hole for the placement of unwaxed dental floss, they are often used to create a weight lift system. The string comes from the egg held in your vagina and is hooked to an object for weightlifting. Kind of like a large tampon string with a weight on the end that maybe hangs by your knees.
Are yoni eggs a good idea?
After boiling my yoni eggs, per the instructions, I decided to test them out. While I do enjoy the look of the egg and the holistic properties thought to be attached to the powers of stone, I think this is a personal preference.
There are many kegel exercises on the market including ben-wa balls and silicone weights that can easily be disinfected and come at a fraction of the cost of yoni eggs. However, if these appeal to you and will encourage you to use them…then they’re a great decision.
I do make a note of cleaning the hole well. While I don’t boil the eggs after each use, and substitute with menstrual cup wash, they do hold up well to a gentle warming into a slow boil on the stove.
Do yoni eggs work?
As with any exercise program, consult your physician or midwife before starting. Just like any and all exercises, practice is key. If you get these and use them once a month you will not receive the benefits of someone who practices daily.
Pairing the exercise with a task like washing dishes, taking a shower or walking the dog may help exercises become part of your routine.
