Does Your Feminine Wash Have Cancer-Causing Chemicals? Natural Feminine Products are out there!

If you stroll down the “feminine” aisle at any supermarket or big box store you will quickly notice a huge assortment of products designed to leave your vulva smelling like a Christmas tree air freshener you’d see hanging from the rearview mirror of an antique car.

Probably not to your surprise, many of these products contain chemicals that are known carcinogens and/or have chemicals that break down into toxic shit. (1) Definitely not ingredients you want to be absorbed through the delicate skin of your vulva and vagina.

Despite the demand for full disclosure of the ingredients in these “feminine” products, big companies continue to put out garbage. Looking for natural feminine products? Check out my review of Elevated Woo Woo wash, Elevated Muffin Mist and Elevated Punani Paste.

Pad below is a custom I purchased from Silly Pando Co.

Natural feminine products can be hard to find in big box stores. Like many of the other non-toxic products I use, I order online. From handmade shampoo bars to lightly scented vulva spray, non-toxic products are out there waiting to be discovered.

The Muffin Mist, Punani Paste and Woo Woo Wash are all made by Elevated, a division of Taylor’s Natural. The company also males Balm! Baby. I was thrilled to see this line from them because I use many of their baby products on my kids and love their nipple balm for breastfeeding.

Elevated Muffin Mist

This is by far my favorite product from the collection. It’s great for everyday use and can be mused multiple times a day! I use this during my menstrual cycle, after sex and for comfort. After delivering 4 babies with a series of complications including an episotomy and a c-section, I appreciate a soothing spray for my vulva and perineal area. I spray this front to back!

Muffin Mist is available in Rose& Vanilla, Citrus & Sage, Unscented, Ylang Ylang & Lavender. I have the lavender!

Awesome Muffin Mist ingredients include: “Aloe vera juice, NON-alcohol witch hazel, extra virgin olive oil, calendula, chamomile & comfrey, chickweed, and (when scent is chosen) lavender or ylang ylang pure essential oil (safe for pregnancy & nursing Mamas), grapefruitseed extract.”

It’s soothing, doesn’t leave me smelling like I’ve been cleaning with lysol and doesn’t stain my panties or pads. I would highly recommend this product!

Elevated Punani Paste

This is very soothing for dry skin or irritation. The site says that this can be used all over but is great for issues like irritation from clothing that’s rubbing the wrong way and can be used externally on dry vulva skin. I don’t use this daily like the Muffin Mist and based on how far it goes…this jar will last me a very long time!

Punani Paste is available in lavender or unscented.

Punani Paste Ingredients: extra virgin olive oil, calendula, chamomile & comfrey, chickweed, cocoa butter, shea butter, candelilla wax, pure essential oil (according to chosen scent), tocopherol

Elevated Woo Woo Wash

Like the Muffin Mist, this is another great everyday product. I use bar soap on the main parts of my body and this for vulva and perineal care. It doesn’t make suds like bar or bottle soap because it’s lacking the stuff in regular soap that zaps your skin of moisture and harsh cleansers.

I use this both in the shower and for periodic cleaning during menstruation and/or if I don’t get to do a full shower and must simply wash what’s important at the time. I refer to that as my Mom shower.

While also listed as a cup wash, I find that it doesn’t leave my cup feeling squeaky clean. Now, that doesn’t mean that it’s not clean…but if you are switching from a cup-brand wash to this you will notice a difference in the way the cup feels. Below is a cup-bath with the washed mixed in. I literally stirred the water and took a photo. As you can see, it’s difficult to tell there is anything in the water!

Woo Woo Wash Ingredients: Taylor’s Specially formulated liquid Castile Soap (using fresh, Hawaiian macadamia nut oil & coconut oil) herbs of calendula, chamomile & comfrey, pure essential oil (according to chosen scent), tocopherol. (No harsh ingredients are used, no glycerin which is natural but extremely processed.)

Overall Impression

I love these products. I do recommend them. I love the care that goes into the product packaging and ingredient selection. They are made in the USA and come from a great company as well. The Woo Woo wash and muffin mist are must-haves and the punani paste is a great cream to have on hand.

  1. Its very frustrating that so many products (most honestly) that you see in store have harmful chemicals. I hate the thought of putting that on my body, much less in a sensitive area of my body! These products sound amazing! I love that the Muffin Mist uses alcohol free witch hazel. It sounds soothing!

  2. I will have to try this. The older I become, the more afraid I am of what products we use and the chemicals inside them.
We typically use goat’s milk soap for our bodies. I’m not sure if it would be a good idea to use it on the cup.
I’ll look more into this and pick up some Woo Woo Wash in the meantime.
    Thank you!

  3. Woo Woo wash. Muffin mist. I’m sold by the names. Ha ha. Seriously though I didn’t think of what might be in my special wash, and not that I have I can’t stop thinking about it. As someone who has used Castillo soap and got the min and tingle treatment I’ve been looking for gentle alternatives.

  4. I never thought about all the chemicals im putting on and in my body. These products look awesome and I will certainly have to try them out. Im most excited about the muffin mist!

  5. Very great post. The amount of chemicals in products is very scary. Knowing there is a safe product makes me feel alot better !

  6. I have been looking for a good cup wash for a long time. It’s so hard to find an exo friendly wash that is safe for your body and your cup. Definitely going to purchase some from Amazon.

  7. When I was a teenager, i had chronic urinary tract infections and yeast infections. My doctor couldn’t figure out why until i read something about chemicals used in soaps and bath products. Sure enough, that’s what it was. I wish more women could read this article! Especially other teenagers that might not know and feel ashamed.

I would love to try any of these. I am methodically changing out all the products my family and I use, to less chemicals and as many reusable products as possible.
