MermaidCup Review + Comparison to Other Brands

I’ve been testing out the MermaidCup and want to share my thoughts and some photos with you! What’s the MermaidCup? The MermaidCup is a V-shaped menstrual cup that is designed in Malaysia and manufactured in China with 100% Imported Japanese (Shin-Etsu) Soft Medical Grade Silicone.

MermaidCups are available in two firmness levels, soft and firm, and two sizes plus a huge range of colors. Take a look below:

Disclosure: I received product samples to facilitate my review however the opinions here are my own.

When I first saw Cotton Mermaid’s MermaidCup, I was excited. I love the name. I’d like to think that despite my lack of swimming skills…I’m a mermaid! Also, I love the huge range of colors and the availability of both a soft and a firm version in both sizes.

I received samples to test out and I knew right away that I’d like this cup brand. I love a V-shaped cup. In fact, the Lunette 2 is quite possibly my favorite cup and, as you can see below, the MermaidCup has a very similar shape.

MermaidCup Features Include:

  • Large range of colors
  • Both Firm & Soft available in Size 1 & 2
  • Scale  grips on the base of the cups to help with grip
  • Trimmable 2 bump stem

  • Manufactured in China
  • Seamless cup body
  • 100% Imported Japanese (Shin-Etsu) Soft Medical Grade Silicone

Overall Impression

I love the shape of these cups! I like both the firm cup (firm cups are typically recommended for a stronger pelvic floor and athletic cup users) and love the firm size 1 for when I’m active. However, the firm size 2 did give me a bit of cramping but it did subside and I would wear this for jogging if my Lunette 2 was unavailable. I’m not super athletic but I do like to do the occasional workout video and go running when I have the chance.

The soft versions, typically recommended for someone with a not-so-athletic pelvic floor and/or sensitive vagina and cervix, weren’t so soft that they wouldn’t open for me and unlike the firm cup versions, I didn’t experience any cramping.

I did notice that the stem bothered me a bit especially right on my urethra and I would consider trimming the stem. As my cervix lowers towards the end of my cycle I found that the stem was close to my vaginal opening, irritating my urethra.

I did not find the stem to be as comfortable as the flatly shaped lunette stem, which for me requires no trimming, but overall has nice flexibility and was easy to grab and remove.

Great price point. Currently, the cups are going for just under $24 USD on the brand’s website!
