Toxins in disposable pads
Our skin in the largest organ in our body. It breathes, sweats and also absorbs what we put on it. Toxins in disposable pads are near some of our most sacred and delicate skin. If you haven’t ditched chemically laced disposable pads, you need to immediately.
While we can speculate, many of the toxins in disposable pads are undisclosed by manufacturers. There is a medical device loop hole that disposable pad companies swim in and hide behind. (1) It’s despicable and disappointing.
Why won’t major manufacturers be forthcoming with disposable pad chemicals? Because they’re toxic and don’t belong anywhere near your vulva or vagina.
Disposable femineine product companies aren’t required to list ingredients, and refuse to voluntarily say what’s in their products. Despite demand from the public.
The largest manufacturers of disposable feminine products, have been the subject of news articles, protests and scrutiny for their reluctance to disclose the ingredients in these products. (1) However, despite the public’s demand for disclosure, we still don’t know what exactly is in disposable pads, tampons and other feminine products. But, independent organizations have done testing. The results are not good.
Disposable femineine products are a chemical shit storm.
When it comes to disposable pads, “hazardous ingredients may include dioxins and furans, pesticide residues, unknown fragrance chemicals, and adhesive chemicals such as methyldibromo glutaronitrile. Exposure concerns include cancer, reproductive harm, and endocrine disruption. Studies link pad use to allergic rash.” (2) Tampons aren’t any better and are even closer to your uterus and worn directly inside of your body. (3)
Do you want to put something full of toxic chemicals next to or into your vagina? Do you want your sister, daughter, mother and friends exposed to these toxins? I don’t.

What can be done?
Today, starting immediately, you can stop using disposable menstrual and incontinence products. Stop using feminine products that you don’t need to use, and start a new routine.
We can call companies, attempt to lobby congress and let everyone know about the risks of using disposable feminine products, but the best way to tell a company that you’re unhappy with their behavior is to stop buying their stuff.
Reusable menstrual products are the future
When I first switched to reusable menstrual products my cramps, the debilitating cramps that arrive 2-3 days before my cycle, disappeared. Turns out, I’m not the only one who has noticed a severe reduction or complete disappearance in menstrual cramping when switching to reusable pads.
If I could convert every woman to reusable menstrual products I would. Yes, there are disposable products out there that are marketed as being more natural. I suppose, if you absolutely refuse to use reusable products that these are the way to go.
Many organic menstrual pad makers have no problem disclosing the ingredients in their pads. This brand is right on Amazon and lists their ingredients right in the product description. Why don’t companies like Always do this? Because their ingredients are fucking scary.
How to start with reusable menstrual products
If you ‘re not already using reusable menstrual products, you need to get started somewhere. Look at your current product and I’m sure there is a reusable product to meet your needs.
Reusable menstrual cups replace tampons, are a one-time purchase and some women have told me that their lasted 10 years or more! They are made from medical grade silicone and don’t pose the risk fro developing TSS like tampons do.
Reusable menstrual pads come in every shape, size, color and even really fun prints and patterns. From post-partum pads all the way down to 6″ liners, once you go reusable you don’t go back!
Upfront cost of a reusable menstrual cup and reusable menstrual pads is greater then disposable. However, they get reused over and over again at each cycle and can last for years.

The only way to make a change is to start with yourself. Switch to reusable, help others to see the benefits and demand to know what exactly goes on and in your body. You only get one.
